Issuing, Testing, and Developing Digital Credentials
The EUDI Wallet Sandbox provides a realistic test environment using sample data, enabling the implementation and testing of use cases for digital identification (PID) and, going forward, for digital credentials known as Electronic Attestations of Attributes (EAAs). Both public and private organizations can issue these digital credentials (as EAA Providers) as well as verify them (as Relying Parties) and deliver services based on that verification. In practical terms, this means organizations can develop and test a wide range of interactions within the Sandbox, from issuing EAAs and validating them to the potential delivery of services, under realistic conditions.
Important for EAA Providers: The design of credentials is intentionally open. Organizations can define their own credential types, such as digital membership cards or educational certificates, and test them in the Sandbox using sample data together with Relying Parties. In addition, participants have the opportunity to coordinate with other Sandbox users testing similar credential types and to jointly consolidate and further develop them. More information is available in the new Onboarding Guide (specifically for EAA Providers).
In general, participation in the Sandbox is a mandatory step for all organizations that intend to issue digital credentials in production via the EUDI Wallet or to offer services based on the verification of credentials stored in the Wallet. Organizations that join early can already launch or expand their EUDI Wallet use cases and actively contribute to the further development of the EUDI Wallet ecosystem. Our Sandbox project team provides support in defining use cases and preparing the technical setup.
Step by Step Toward a Productive EUDI Wallet
Over the coming months, the EUDI Wallet ecosystem will continue to expand and move step by step toward production readiness. Already today, the Sandbox reflects the core architecture and governance model and can therefore be used to implement use cases in preparation for go‑live. By participating, public and private organizations can exchange insights, learn from one another, and jointly prepare for the broad rollout of the EUDI Wallet.
Our goal remains clear: to create an easy‑to‑use, secure, and privacy‑compliant solution for digital identities and credentials - laying the foundation for a trusted digital ecosystem in Germany and across Europe.
