We build an open wallet ecosystem that makes trusted digital interactions effortless for everyone. Digital identities should simplify everyday life, build trust, and strengthen digital sovereignty across Germany and Europe. To achieve this, we are developing a government-provided, user-centric infrastructure for digital credentials in Germany – in alignment with the EU’s eIDAS 2.0 regulation.

How we are implementing the EUDI Wallet:

  • We are developing a government EUDI Wallet app that meets the requirements of the eIDAS 2.0 regulation.
  • We are creating a viable overall concept (Blueprint) for the national EUDI Wallet system.
  • We are defining clear technical, legal, and user-oriented requirements for all governmental and non-governmental stakeholders.
  • We are establishing the foundations for eIDAS-compliant certification to ensure trust and interoperability.
  • We are preparing the phased, nationwide rollout of the EUDI Wallet in Germany.

The project has been developed in an open and participatory process since summer 2023. The specialist public, administration, business, civil society and future users continuously contribute their perspectives. This feedback flows directly into the further development of the national blueprint and the development of the state EUDI Wallet. They help to make the solution practical, trustworthy and user-oriented.

On behalf of the Federal Ministry for Digital and State Modernization, SPRIND is leading the EUDI Wallet project and is responsible for the development of the state EUDI Wallet and the establishment of the ecosystem.

Development of the national EUDI-Wallet and digital infrastructure

    Implementation of the app and infrastructure

    The project is developing two things simultaneously: a secure smartphone app and the underlying digital infrastructure. This creates the technical foundation to ensure that digital credentials work in Germany and are securely verified everywhere.

    National EUDI-Wallet app

    We are developing the official EUDI-Wallet app for Germany to serve as your digital wallet. Users can securely store their national ID card and other digital credentials to identify themselves online or in person via smartphone – completely without paper or plastic cards.

    Establishing the digital ecosystem

    To ensure the app is truly useful, we are building the necessary infrastructure and rules for secure operations. This ecosystem connects users, businesses, and government agencies from all areas of society. This guarantees that your digital ID will be seamlessly accepted at the bank, government offices, or by your doctor.

    Sandbox testing

    Before the app launches, we are testing the infrastructure in a secure testing environment (sandbox). Here, companies and public authorities test their processes and use cases under realistic conditions. We use the participants' feedback to continuously improve the EUDI-Wallet app for real-world everyday use.

    Expanding use cases

    The project is constantly expanding the digital infrastructure. With a growing number of partners, new everyday possibilities are emerging. In parallel, the app is gaining additional features: besides IDs and credentials, you will soon be able to digitally sign documents—in a legally binding and straightforward way.

    Alternative wallet providers

    The system is designed to be open. In the future, alongside the national solution, private providers will also be able to launch their own EUDI-Wallet apps. The prerequisite is strict compliance with uniform security standards. This ensures freedom of choice in using an EUDI-Wallet app while maintaining high security.
