With the EUDI Wallet, Germany provides an official solution for digital identification and essential documents – voluntary to use and regulated throughout Europe.
The advantages of the EUDI Wallet at a glance

Online & On-site
The EUDI Wallet can be used both digitally and in person. Identity and documents can be presented flexibly and in line with the situation.
Accessibility
Clear language, supporting functions and multilingual content make access easier. The development is based on recognized standards for accessibility.
How to use the EUDI Wallet in everyday life
When can I use the EUDI Wallet?
-
From the beginning of 2027
The German EUDI Wallet app will launch in early 2027, laying the foundation for a trusted digital infrastructure. The first version will be available as a free mobile app, replacing insecure “screenshot” workarounds. It provides an eIDAS-compliant foundation for everyday digital identity and credentials.
-
For users
Users can conveniently and securely store their ID card, electronic residence permit and other digital credentials. They decide at all times when and where data is shared – securely encrypted and always under the user’s control.
-
For public authorities
With its first version, the project delivers a key building block of the digital infrastructure for public authorities and public sector bodies. Moving away from insecure interim solutions towards a trustworthy service that demonstrates: a modern, digital Germany is possible.
-
For businesses
Companies and public authorities can verify the identities and credentials of their customers efficiently, cost‑effectively and in a legally secure manner. This reduces fraud, avoids media disruptions and ensures a smooth user experience.
Implementation stages of the national EUDI Wallet
From IDs and credentials to digital signatures
Identify digitally and in person
Person Identification Data (PID) is your digital ID at the highest eIDAS assurance level ("high"). It enables secure identification –online and in person – without the need for a physical document. For you, this means tedious verification processes like Video-ID are no longer necessary. Through selective disclosure, you decide exactly what to share with every request. For example, you can prove you are of legal age without revealing your exact date of birth or address to third parties.
Store and share digital credentials
In the EUDI Wallet, everyday documents can be stored as Electronic Attestations of Attributes (EAA), and official documents as Qualified Electronic Attestations of Attributes (QEAA). This ranges from a simple gym membership card to a driver’s license. For you, this means: All important certificates are securely on your smartphone at all times. You share these documents in a targeted, data-minimizing way and stay in control. These qualified attestations possess exactly the same legal validity as physical paper documents.
Sign digitally with legal validity
Looking ahead, the EUDI Wallet will be expanded to include the Qualified Electronic Signature (QES). This allows contracts and documents to be signed fully digitally and with legal validity across Europe at the highest level. For you, this means: This digital signature is legally equivalent to a handwritten signature. Signing documents becomes significantly easier, faster, and more secure. Printing paper or mailing documents will finally be a thing of the past.
Secure and pseudonymous login
In the future, the EUDI Wallet will enable highly secure access to online services. A key feature will be the pseudonymous login, where only the absolutely necessary identity attributes are transmitted. For you, this means: You provide verified proof to a platform that you are an authorized user without disclosing your real name or other private data. This privacy-friendly approach protects your identity online and makes insecure, complex passwords completely obsolete.
Full data control. Maximum security.
Local storage
Documents are encrypted and stored on your smartphone. There is no central data collection. Data is only transferred if you actively release it.
Selective disclosure
Only the information required for a specific purpose is transmitted. For example, confirmation of the age of majority instead of the full date of birth.
Verified Data Requests
Only state-registered organizations are permitted to request data via the EUDI Wallet. Your wallet automatically verifies the certificate of the relying party and only allows access for the officially registered purpose.
Certified and regulated
The EUDI Wallet is based on GDPR and eIDAS 2.0 Regulation requirements. Both the state and alternative wallets must meet high security and data protection requirements.
No central usage profiles
The wallet does not create any overarching usage profiles for you. Each data release takes place on an ad hoc basis and is not merged across systems.
Protection in the event of device loss
If you lose your device, the wallet can be blocked. This ensures that your documents are secure. Security mechanisms ensure that documents remain protected.
The state EUDI Wallet. From idea to implementation.
The state-issued EUDI Wallet securely brings credentials to your smartphone. As a digital wallet for people in Germany, it makes official credentials usable in everyday life – simple, fast, and data-minimizing.
- Everything in one app With the EUDI Wallet, you can identify yourself digitally, securely store credentials and, in the future, also sign documents electronically – all in one app and always under your control.
- Your data remains protected The EUDI Wallet meets the requirements of the EU eIDAS 2.0 Regulation and the GDPR. Your data is stored in encrypted form on your device. There is no central data repository.
- Part of a strong ecosystem The EUDI Wallet is not a standalone solution. It is part of an interoperable European system that is gradually integrating alternative wallet providers, digital services and new use cases.
- Usable across Europe The foundation for the state-issued EUDI Wallet is the EU Regulation (eIDAS 2.0), which creates uniform and secure standards. For you, this means: Soon, you will be able to use your German EUDI Wallet anywhere in Europe.
- Current status of development Identification using PID (short for personal identification data) is currently being tested in a test environment (sandbox) for various use cases. The first version of the state EUDI Wallet is planned for early 2027.
